BUFFALO GROVE — Buffalo Grove boys soccer coach Rick Carlson was noticeably upset after his team’s 5-3 victory over Elk Grove on Thursday, a sentiment that revealed the sort of talent the Bison have — and the great expectations that surround them.
“I’m disappointed we gave up the three goals,” Carlson said. “We didn’t need to give up the first one, although it was well hit. We’re making too many mistakes out there, and we can’t do that in this conference and continue to win.”
Despite Buffalo Grove dominating ball control for most of the first half, it was actually the Grenadiers who struck first, putting the ball past senior goalkeeper Anthony Pawlicki at the 32-minute mark. Buffalo Grove senior forward Demos Drakoulis responded with two goals of his own, including a slick header off a throw-in. Another goal by Buffalo Grove senior midfielder Irving Balboa with seven minutes left closed out the action in the first half.
In what was easily the highlight of the match, senior midfielder Irving Eloiza booted a 30-yard rocket that ricocheted off the top post, bounced off the goalkeeper’s back and rolled into the net for a 4-1 Bison lead.
To Carlson’s dismay, Buffalo Grove team seemed passive and content the rest of the way, letting the Grenadiers climb back to a 4-3 game until Balboa scored again to put the nail in the coffin.
Buffalo Grove improved to 7-0 on the year.
