Buffalo Grove High School senior Robert Hawkins pitched a five-inning no-hitter against Wheeling High School in the regular season. What would he do for an encore against the same team in an IHSA sectional quarterfinal Monday? No perfect game was in the offing, and although he yielded four hits he actually pitched significantly better than during his no-hitter. Celebrated soccer player Arne Friedrich will be in the house. Friedrich, who played for the German National Team which took third in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, is scheduled to make an appearance at Schwaben Club Open house tonight. Friedrich made 82 appearances with the German National team and also was on the team when they placed second in the Euro Cup in 2008. He currently is playing for Chicago Fire. Vernon Hills topped Lake Forest 25-18, 25-18 to finish 9-1. Stevenson matched that record with a 25-20, 25-21 victory over Zion-Benton. The two teams have split this season. He might be a little guy, but Stevenson’s Kihwan Kim runs and jumps like a giant. At last Thursday’s North Suburban Conference meet, Kim pulled a rare double. First, he won the long jump title with a leap of 21-0 3/4. Then, he ran the second leg of the Patriots’ winning 4x100 relay team (43.44). As part of their training on most days this spring, members of Stevenson High School’s girls water polo team swam 4,000 yards. Patriots senior Erin McCook shared the detail after Saturday’s Palatine sectional final. One thought typically raced through her mind while she churned the equivalent of an elite NFL quarterback’s season yardage total each day in the water. “I often thought, ‘I hope this pays off,’” she said.
