LINCOLNSHIRE — Parents of future Stevenson High School students: hold off on buying that iPad for future Patriots. The school is picking one out already. A new technology program that goes into effect this fall will put 2,000 of the Apple tablets into the hands of next year’s freshmen and sophomores. After graduation, the hardware might be theirs to keep, and the classes below them will receive products of their own. BUFFALO GROVE — Corinne Ginder, a Family Consumer Science and Health teacher at Buffalo Grove High School, will be honored at Illinois State University in Normal, in celebration of her 2013 induction into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Though a Bison for the past 14 years, Ginder’s path to Hall of Fame status began across town in Arlington Heights as a John Hersey High School Huskie. There, she starred on the basketball court from 1990-1994, becoming the school’s leading scorer of the time in girls basketball (1527 points), and led the way to Hersey’s first sectional title. …

North Shore’s first recovery high school to open in Lake Bluff

The area’s first high school for teens recovering from alcohol and drug addiction, eating disorders or other mental health issues will open in Lake Bluff June 3. Newport Academy Day School will be the first recovery high school serving Chicago’s North Shore teens, age 15 to 19.

Young docents bring Observatory to life Students in Harper College’s Henize Observatory Student Docent Program participate in weekly after-school activities ranging from Girl Scouts to basketball. But every Saturday, they meet to fuel their common curiosity of the cosmos. The students — seventh- through 12th-graders from across the Northwest suburbs — are part of Harper’s new initiative that trains local middle and high school students to run the telescopes and identify astronomical elements for the hundreds of stargazers who visit the observatory each year. Professor honored for environmental work For five years, Harper College students have cut brush, pulled weeds and restored living spaces for living things as volunteers with local environmental organizations. Now a Barrington-based group is honoring the professor who inspired them. Craig Stettner, an associate professor of biology who also oversees Harper’s Environmental Club, has been named the winner of this year’s William H. Miller Conservation Award, the highest honor bestowed by the 42-year-old Citizens for Conservation organization. Madrigal performances Stevenson High School will be holding its annual Madrigal performances at noon and at 6 p.m. on Sunday (March 17). This annual tradition began back in 1965 and this year’s co-curricular program is entitled “Harvest Heist.” The community is invited to enjoy a cappella singing, acting, dancing, trumpeters and a string ensemble. The event is organized around a student written script. Tickets range in price from $15 for children/students and seniors up to $20-$25 for adult tickets. BUFFALO GROVE — Twin Groves Middle School’s wrestlers are Patriot Athletic Conference champions, again. The school won its fourth consecutive PAC tournament on Feb. 16, earning 306 total points. The team’s closest competitor finished with 146. These volunteers were recognized as part of the school district’s annual Distinguished Service Awards program.
