Savings for the county may mean more expenses for local taxpayers. To rid itself of as many expenses as possible, debt-plagued Cook County announced April 30 its desire for its suburban municipalities to absorb all unincorporated areas. While the Cook County government would gain some savings, taxpayers in affected areas would have to pay for a multitude of upgrades required by their new villages’ codes. For the unincorporated spaces around Buffalo Grove, a switchover might run more expensive than most places. Stevenson High School hosted the Community Symposium “Saving Our Children” on Wednesday, a discussion of the dangers of illicit drug use, an annual event held in conjunction with Buffalo Grove High School. Also invited were families from Libertyville and Vernon Hills high schools.

A Buffalo Grove man admitted in court May 9 he was drunk when the car he was driving slammed into a second vehicle, killing its driver. Jiho Lee pled guilty in Cook County court to aggravated driving under the influence and received a seven-year prison sentence. Lee, who was 22 at the time, was driving north on Sanders Road with two other men at 1:35 a.m. Aug. 25. As he approached Commercial Avenue, 58-year-old Zofia E. Strzalkowska of Mount Prospect was turning left to southbound Sanders. Lee, who was arrested for speeding and having no insurance, among other charges at …

Self defense club has a hold at Stevenson

Self Defense Intramural Club may be the only opportunity for students to be introduced and even encouraged to put their teacher into a martial-arts style submission hold. “Look at how happy he is right now,” Stevenson High School world history teacher Josh Flood said regarding his student during a club meeting. He stood in the center of the room, surrounded by club members, with 17-year-old student Vince Fiorentini’s hands around his neck.
