Cub Scout Pack 140 at Saint Mary Parish held its annual Pinewood Derby Event Jan. 14.

Prior to the event, the Pack held a workshop for first time racers or any parent and Scout needing assistance creating a car. The Pack workshop was a partnership with “The Wood Shop,” a joint venture with the Village of Arlington Heights, The Senior Center, Inc. and Arlington Heights Park District.

The two retired gentleman that run “The Woodshop” are no strangers to the Pinewood Derby, both having had sons that participated in Cub Scouting and being Pack Leaders. The workshop offered parents and their Scouts ideas and helpful hints on creating a derby car, drawing the design and assisting in cutting and modeling the cars. There were participants from every den level at the workshop and one of the winning top three speed racers in each den had attended the workshop.

More than 50 scouts, siblings and dads entered cars to race in Pack 140’s derby. After all the races for the Scouts conclude, all siblings had a chance to race their cars, from Barbie to Sponge Bob designs, as well as dads who couldn’t get enough and just had a need for speed.

In addition to speed, awards were given out for most original, Scout theme and traditional designs.

To complement the afternoon of racing, Pack 140 held its annual chili cook off. This year, there were more than 10 chili crock pot entries. Fun was had by all, tasting all the great chilies, watching the races and then having their favorite chili and a hot dog for lunch. Congratulations to Cub Scout Pack 140 on a wonderful event.
