Indian Trails

receives award

The Indian Trails Public Library District has received an award for $4,800 from The Penny Severns Summer Family Literacy Grant Program.

The program aims at improving reading, math or English language skills of low-literate and limited English proficient parents and children during the summer. Services include reading enrichment and interactive, reciprocal learning experiences that parents and children participate in together.

Beth Judea

welcomes rabbi

Congregation Beth Judea conducted a dessert reception Wednesday for all new and current members to meet their new rabbi. Jeff Pivo, who was joined by his wife, Lisa, and their children, Celia, Max and Zachary.

As of July 1, Rabbi Howard Lifshitz became rabbi emeritus at Beth Judea.

Pivo is ending his tenure at Congregation Beth El, in Yardley, Pa. He served as rabbi at Beth El, a community of 300 members, since 2003, and during that time, Pivo’s membership grew. Under Pivo’s leadership Beth El was able to build a sanctuary and social hall. He also developed celebratory, religious and social events, including a Shabbat healing service. His Interfaith Forum helped broaden the synagogue’s connection with the community at large. Pivo had a relationship with all age groups and has been active with the Tiny Tots Program, religious school and adult education. He believes that “a community grows from within, by building relationships between the rabbi and congregants, between congregants and congregants, and between congregants and G-d.”

Prior to his current post, Pivo led Temple Hatikvah in Flanders, N.J. for two years. He has taught at the Schechter School in New Milford, N.J. and at the Melton Adult Mini-School and the Hirschhorn Lecture Program in Whippany, N.J.

Pivo grew up in Orange County, Calif.

Pivo’s children, Celia, an eighth-grader; Max, a sixth-grader; and Zachary, a fourth-grader, will be enrolled at the Solmon Schechter Day School in the fall.

Bicycles accepted

at market

The Buffalo Grove Environmental Action Team and the non-profit Working Bikes Cooperative will collect unwanted, but usable, bicycles during an upcoming Farmer’s Market.

The event will also include bicycle helmet safety checks by Buffalo Grove police.

Donations will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 24 at the market, 951 McHenry Road, outside Spray ‘N Play.

Tavern honors

veterans July 24

Area veterans will be the guests of honor July 24, when the Village Tavern in Long Grove holds its second annual pig roast and concert.

The event goes from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the tavern, 135 Old McHenry Road, with bands playing all day. There is no entrance fee for the general public.

The celebration will include a raffle and prizes, and attendees are encouraged to bring cards and care package items, which the nonprofit group Operation Airlift will send to troops overseas.
