The Buffalo Grove Farmers Market at Spray ‘n Play, 951 N. McHenry Road, has more than 25 vendors with products including, meats, dairy, vegetables, fruit, flowers, spices, herbs, seasonings, kettle corn, mushrooms, pastries, dog biscuits, tapenades and doughnuts made on site. Shoppers can also have their knives and scissors sharpened on site. Non-perishable food items will be collected at the market’s information booth to benefit the Vernon Township Food Pantry. Education
The Center for Gifted, 1926 Waukegan Road, Glenview, is offering a 5 percent tuition discount to students entering pre-kindergarten through 12th grades for its summer programs located in 17 Chicago and suburban communities. Local classes meet from 9 a.m. to noon through July 14 and July 18-28 at Cooper Middle School, 1050 W. Plum Grove Circle, Buffalo Grove. Applications are accepted, as space allows, until classes begin. In the Chicago area elementary programs, three 50-minute morning periods are included in two-week sessions. “Math to Boggle the Brain,” “Roller Coaster Physics,” “Chocolate-Ology” and “Creative Word Play and Writing.” In an optional afternoon program, art, drama, science, history, computer technology, cooperative games and outdoor play are included. Fifty and 100 percent scholarships are based on financial need and are available for students in prekindergarten through 12th grade. The Center for Gifted programs are open to students from any educational background — public, private, parochial or home schools. Enrollment in a gifted program and test scores are not required for registration. However, students generally rank at or above the 95th percentile in their individual areas of expertise. Courses are also offered to elementary students this summer in Burr Ridge; the Chicago neighborhoods of Lakeview, Beverley and Oriole Park; Elmhurst; Elgin; Glenview; Gurnee; Naperville; Oak Forest and Skokie. Adult Jewish Education Co-op of the Northwest Suburbs is sponsoring three speakers for its 2011 Spring Program. The 13th annual Wellness Challenge Golf Classic, will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 28 at Twin Orchard Country Club, 22353 Old McHenry Road, Long Grove. The Sisterhood of Congregation Beth Judea sponsors its annual Rummage Sale from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 7 in the Beth Judea Social Hall. Beth Judea is located on IL Route 83 and Hilltop Road (a quarter- mile north of Aptakisic Road and a half-mile south of Route 22) in Long Grove. The Sisterhood will accept gently used clothing and household goods from July 31 to Aug. 5 (before 11 a.m.). A Midsummer Knight’s Read – The Summer Reading Program has games and prizes all built around kings, queens and knights. Winning prizes is possible by reading books. Read to Rover 6 p.m. July 14. Calvin and Gracie are two certified therapy dogs who will have children read to them. Children’s Advocates Used Book Sale July 15-17: Hours are: 5-8:30 p.m. July 15, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 16 and noon to 3 p.m. July 17. Sidewalk Dragon Drawing: 10 a.m. July 22 for students entering grades 6-8. Test drawing skills against others creating dragon drawings on the library sidewalk. The best dragon gets a prize. Registration is required.
Teen Iron Chef: 1 p.m. July 29. Grab some friends, form a team, and be given a bag of ingredients and an hour to make a three-course meal fit for a picnic outing. The team with the best meal receives a prize. The program is for students entering grades 6-8. Registration is required.
Family programs
Chess Club: 7 p.m. Aug. 12. Sharpen chess skills during exploration of the game of kings and queens with Eric Heiser of the Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation. Chess boards will be on hand. No advanced registration is required.
Moon Jumpers: 7 p.m. July 14, The summer story time will feature Moon Jumpers by Janice May Udry. The program is for youth ages 5-6. Registration is required.
Religion
Anshe Tikvah is a Jewish congregation serving the North and Northwest Suburbs. No one is sent away. The first year of religious school is free with membership. Youth
Congregation Beth Judea (Conservative/Masorti) has a youth department which works on bringing the Jewish youth of the community together through programming, religious learning and Gemilut Hasidim (acts of kindness). Beth Judea offers programs for third-graders through high school students, regardless of their Jewish affiliation. Beth Judea has three youth groups: Kadinkers is the youngest group and is for students in third through fifth grades. It meets once a month after Sunday School. Yearly dues are $18.
Kadima is a youth group for students in sixth through eighth grades. Kadima meets once or twice a month. Yearly dues are $40. United Synagogue Youth is the group for all high school students. The teen group meets on a weekly basis for an assortment of activities. Yearly dues are $50. A child’s family need not be a member of Beth Judea for the child to join a Beth Judea youth group. Teens needed to serve as live art at 10th annual Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival July 16 and 17, 2011 held in the Buffalo Grove Town Center, at the intersection of McHenry Road (Route 83) and Lake Cook Road. Performers must be 15 years old and over; volunteer to pose for two hours in an assigned location striking poses for about 10 seconds. Poses are to be artistic, G-rated and safe. Teens may pose as solos or as duets. Teens must have a release from a parent/guardian to participate. Performers furnish their own costume and makeup. Parenting a Child with Special Needs, a weekly parent support group from 7-8:30 p,m. Wednesdays. Parents support one another as they discuss the stresses and challenges involved in having children with special needs. Topics include: Parents’ grieving process; strategies for coping with multiple demands, roles and stresses; managing family and social relationships; and the transformation experience of parenting a child with special needs. Futures Planning. JCFS staff assists with ensuring a loved one’s needs are met when you are no longer able to do so. They work with individuals through their Family Bridges program or you can participate in the Future is Now! group and work alongside other families for seven sessions. JCYS North Shore Day Camp and NSDC Sports offer summer camp activities for campers entering kindergarten to eighth grade. From every day camp fun, to field trips to major league baseball games, water parks, swimming, sports, etc. Clinics to improve skills in a variety of sports. Instructional swim lessons in Lillian Lutz Rec. Center four days a week with 5th day being field trips to area sites. Register for 4, 6, or 8 week options. The Children’s Advocates, Indian Trails Public Library District, is an independent organization made up of patrons of the library district who support children by presenting programs to promote library use, sponsor fund-raising activities, promote the library as a safe, educational and fun place for children. Advocates also work to raise awareness of library programs/services. They sponsor quarterly bus trips to places throughout Illinois as well as one to two unique programs. In 2005 the Advocates collected toy donations for Hurricane Katrina. The group is at a point where they need to build upon the members and the support they provide to the library. The Northwest Suburban Guild of Children’s Memorial Hospital seeks new members. Guild meets once a month September-May at a member’s home.
