Teens needed to serve as live art at 10th annual Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival July 16 and 17, 2011 held in the Buffalo Grove Town Center, at the intersection of McHenry Road (Route 83) and Lake Cook Road. Performers must be 15 years old and over; volunteer to pose for two hours in an assigned location striking poses for about 10 seconds. Poses are to be artistic, G-rated and safe. Teens may pose as solos or as duets. Teens must have a release from a parent/guardian to participate. Performers furnish their own costume and makeup. Performers are judged on best costume, most creative costume, best make-up, best posing. Winners receive “Art Bucks” good for the purchase of art and jewelry at the festival. The Buffalo Grove Farmers Market at Spray ‘n Play, 951 N. McHenry Road, will have more than 25 vendors with products including, meats, dairy, vegetables, fruit, flowers, spices, herbs, seasonings, kettle corn, mushrooms, pastries, dog biscuits, tapenades and doughnuts made on site. Shoppers can also have their knives and scissors sharpened at the market. Non-perishable food items will be collected at the market’s information booth to benefit the Vernon Township Food Pantry. The Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) has a Battery Recycling Program for rechargeable and alkaline batteries. Free to SWANCC communities. Batteries accepted: Alkaline: AA, AAA, C, D and 9V. Rechargeable: NiCd, NiMh, lithium ion, lithium polymer - Before dropping off rechargeable batteries, residents need to tape the contact points on each battery or place in individual self-locking plastic bags to avoid sparks. Buffalo Grove Bank & Trust has a recycling initiative for old dry cell batteries, cell phones, crayons. Members of community can deposit these items into canisters found in main lobby of bank, 200 N. Buffalo Grove Road. Old dry cell batteries, cell phones collected to keep them out of landfills. Crayons turned into jumbo crayons for disabled children.

Garden
A Garden Walk will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 11 to benefit local student internships in landscaping and maintenance of the Reed Turner Woodland in Long Grove, as well as other local charities. Four area gardens will be open for the club’s garden tour, followed by a boxed lunch (choose from four). Perennial, annual and native garden designs, including varieties of hostas, will be featured. Reservations are required at a cost of $25 ($20 without lunch). Youth Programs
A Midsummer Knight’s Read – The Summer Reading Program has games and prizes all built around kings, queens and knights. Winning is achieved by reading books. Children through eighth grade can take part in a Royal Adventure. To become a knight from the Kingdom of Indian Trails, sign up at the Kids Desk. The last day for sign up is July 30. Programs conclude Aug. 6.
Bookworms’ Book Club for fourth- and fifth-grade students is from July 1-10. Pick up a copy of the book - The Caudill Award-nominated “Masterpiece” by Elise Broach - for the August Book Club meeting. Get a book at the Kids Desk and read it before the event. At the Book Club talk, get a snack and make a craft. Register when you pick up your free book. Read to Rover 6 p.m. July 14. Calvin and Gracie are certified therapy dogs who love to have children read to them. Children’s Advocates Used Book Sale on July 15-17: Hours are 5-8:30 p.m. July 15, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 16 and noon to 3 p.m. July 17. It is separate from the Adult Book Sale and held in the Small Meeting Room. Audiovisual materials will be offered. On July 17, most books will be included in a $3-per-bag sale. Teen programs
Safe Sitter Babysitting Clinic: 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 8-9. You must attend both days to receive a Completion Card. The clinic is an instruction workshop for children ages 11-14. A student kit with a messenger bag is given out upon completion. Registration is required. A $25 non-refundable fee is due at the time of registration. Indian Trails patrons will be given priority.
Celtic Tattoos: 10 a.m. July 12. In a twist on tattoos, get hands and feet decorated with Celtic designs. The program is for students entering grades 6-8. Registration is required.
Spa-Tacular: 10 a.m. July 19, for students entering sixth to eighth grades. Learn to make soaps, lotions and bath salts. Registration is required.
Sidewalk Dragon Drawing: 10 a.m. July 22, for students entering grades 6-8. Test drawing skills against others as you create dragon arts on the library sidewalk. Artwork judged “best” gets a prize. Registration is required.
Teen Iron Chef: 1 p.m. July 29. Form a team and visit the library where you’ll be given a bag of ingredients and an hour to make an entire three-course meal fit for a picnic outing. The team with the best meal receives a prize. The program is for students entering grades 6-8. Registration is required.
Family programs
Chess Club: 7 p.m. July 8 and Aug. 12. The club meets every other week through Aug. 12. Sharpen chess skills during exploration of the game of kings and queens with Eric Heiser of the Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation. Chess boards will be on hand. No advanced registration is required.

Anavi and Her Doll with Green Eyes: 7 p.m. July 29. Piel Morena Contemporary Dance presents Anavi and her Doll with Green Eyes, a dance performance based on a fictional children’s book written by Mexican author Verónica González Andrews. PMCD has been helping children cope with grief and fear by using a fictional story as a tool in schools throughout the Chicago area. Families are welcome, but the program is most appropriate for youth in kindergarten and grade 3. Registration is required.
Religion
Anshe Tikvah is a Jewish congregation serving the north and northwest suburbs. No one is turned away. The first year of religious school is free with new membership.

The Children’s Advocates, Indian Trails Public Library District, is an independent organization made up of patrons of the library district who support children by presenting programs to promote library use, sponsor fund-raising activities, promote the library as a safe, educational and fun place for children. Advocates also work to raise awareness of library programs/services. They sponsor quarterly bus trips to places throughout Illinois as well as one to two unique programs. In 2005 the Advocates collected toy donations for Hurricane Katrina. The group is at a point where they need to build upon the members and the support they provide to the library. The Northwest Suburban Guild of Children’s Memorial Hospital seeks new members. Guild meets once a month September-May at a member’s home. Youth
Congregation Beth Judea (Conservative/Masorti) has a youth department which works on bringing the Jewish youth of the community together through programming, religious learning and Gemilut Hasidim (acts of kindness). Beth Judea offers programs for third-graders through high school students, regardless of their Jewish affiliation. Beth Judea has three youth groups:
Kadinkers is the youngest group and is for students in third through fifth grades. It meets once a month after Sunday School. Yearly dues are $18.
Kadima is a youth group for students in sixth through eighth grades. Kadima meets once or twice a month. Yearly dues are $40.
United Synagogue Youth is the group for all high school students. The teen group meets on a weekly basis for an assortment of activities. Yearly dues are $50.
A child’s family need not be a member of Beth Judea for the child to join a Beth Judea youth group member.
