Community

The Buffalo Grove Farmers Market at Spray ‘n Play, 951 N. McHenry Road, will have more than 25 vendors with products including, meats, dairy, vegetables, fruit, flowers, spices, herbs, seasonings, kettle corn, mushrooms, pastries, dog biscuits, tapenades and doughnuts made on site. Shoppers can also have their knives and scissors sharpened on site. Entertainment June 26 includes professional acoustic guitarist Lisa Berkshire of Angry Laughter and a roving balloon artist who produces custom creations. Non-perishable food items will be collected at the market’s information booth to benefit the Vernon Township Food Pantry. Garden

Elaine Silets, together with The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program, invites residents to the annual Open House and Garden Walk from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 25 at Wandering Tree, 125 Arrowhead Lane (located between routes 59 and 12 and accessed from the north off of Miller Road). JCFS

JCFS will be supporting children and families in need, while honoring Bruce Goldman and celebrating Judge Julian Frazin. The event takes place from 4-7 p.m. June 26 at Pinstripes, 1150 Willow Road, Northbrook. It will feature food, bowling and bocce. Also, a $5,000 raffle will take place. Funds raised ensure that JCFS’ services continue to “redefine what’s possible” in people’s lives. Goldman is a past president of JCFS and helped to shape the agency into what it is. Goldman is being recognized with the Irving B. Harris Award, JCFS’ highest honor for commitment to improve the lives of families. JCFS will also be celebrating the story of Judge Frazin who as a child lived in the Chicago Home for Jewish Orphans, a JCFS legacy agency. Frazin said he is grateful for the safe haven he found in JCFS and how this experience redefined his life. Children Learn to Draw Dragon, Castles, Knights and Royalty at the Library - An art workshop for children ages 7 and up,

How to Draw Medieval Stuff: Dragons, Castles, Knights and Royalty, highlights the theme of the Indian Trails Public Library Summer Reading Program, A Midsummer Knight’s Read. The art workshop, held at 11 a.m. June 24, is designed to give young artists practical drawing tips and inspiration to explore new subject areas and artistic media. The library’s Summer Reading Program continues until Aug. 6. The Summer Reading Program for high schoolers and adults features prizes and contest drawings for readers who complete pre-set reading levels. A Medieval Faire, scheduled for Aug. 6, concludes the Summer Reading Program with a festival involving food, face-painting, a balloon sculptor and a demonstration by the Chicago Swordplay Guild. Youth programs

Preschool Drop-In Storytime: 11 a.m. June 27 or June 28. A half-hour of stories, rhymes and a short film. The program is for youth ages 3-5. No siblings or guardians may bring the preschoolers. Ice Cream Making: 1 p.m. June 28. A two-hour event making ice cream and then eating it with toppings. The program is for youths in grades 6-8.

Chess Club: 7 p.m. June 24. The club meets every other week through Aug. 12. Sharpen chess skills during exploration of the game of kings and queens with expert Eric Heiser of the Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation.

Kite Flying Day: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 26. Fly your own kite or learn from the professionals as they fly stunt kites and do flying tricks. All ages are welcome.

Teens needed to serve as live art at 10th annual Buffalo Grove Invitational Fine Art Festival July 16 and 17, 2011 held in the Buffalo Grove Town Center, at the intersection of McHenry Road (Route 83) and Lake Cook Road. Performers must be 15 years old and over; volunteer to pose for two hours in an assigned location striking poses for about 10 seconds. Poses are to be artistic, G-rated and safe. Buffalo Grove Road. Old dry cell batteries, cell phones collected to keep them out of landfills. Crayons turned into jumbo crayons for disabled children.

Congregation Beth Judea (Conservative/Masorti) has a Youth Department that works on bringing the Jewish youth of the community together through programming, religious learning and Gemilut Hasidim (acts of loving kindness). Programs for 3rd graders-high school students, regardless of Jewish affiliation. Three Youth Groups: Kadinkers is the youngest youth group for students in third-fifth grades. It meets once a month on Sunday after Sunday School. Yearly dues $18. Kadima is the youth group for students in sixth-eighth grade and meets once or twice a month. Yearly dues $40. USY (United Synagogue Youth) is the youth group for all high school students and meets on a weekly basis. Yearly dues $50.
