Buffalo Grove Police: offer to pay for crimes a scam

BUFFALO GROVE — According to a scam circulating on the internet, justice can be bought — and for bargain-basement prices.

A resident of the 1100 block of Hidden Lake Drive stopped in at the police station on Jan. 9, suspecting that he was about to become the victim of fraud.

The man told police officers that he had turned his laptop computer on that day and a message popped up, informing him that the Department of Justice was on its way to arrest him for any one of three crimes: child pornography, software piracy and something else that the man could not remember. The screen instructed him to go out immediately and purchase a $300 “Money Pak” pre-paid credit card, then type the card’s serial number and security code into the spaces on the screen, police said.

The screen even included a countdown timer, showing the man how long he had to buy the card and type its information in. The man promptly went out and bought the card — but stopped by the police station on his way home.

Officers informed him that it was a scam and suggested that he have his computer examined.
