BUFFALO GROVE — Kiernan Deer, a second-grader at St. Mary School, received a ride to class on a Buffalo Grove Fire Department truck recently.

The boy, whose current dream is to be a firefighter when he grows up, won the prize with help from his parents and his teachers.

At the school’s recent fundraising auction, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department donated a truck ride, which Kiernan’s parents planned to bid for. But the boy had a fever the night of the event and his parents stayed home with him. The school’s staff, knowing his firefighting dream, bid on the family’s behalf and won.

Kiernan shared the prize with his classmates.
