ARLINGTON HEIGHTS — State Rep. Elaine Nekritz, D-Northbrook, will be returning to Springfield, and this time she wants to bring home state pension reforms.
The Democratic incumbent was elected to her sixth term Tuesday night, earning 55 percent of the vote. With 63 of the district’s 69 precincts reporting as of 10 p.m. Tuesday, Nekritz had 17,117 votes to Republican challenger Jonathan Greenberg’s 13,916 votes.
“Voters responded to all the work we did,” Nekritz said, commenting on her victory. “I thank them for their support.
“It is hard to know what to attribute their voting support to, but it is nice to know that they responded to me as an individual and to my leadership. They showed faith in the work I am doing and I am thrilled with the results.”
Liz Brough, campaign manager for Greenberg, said the challenger called Nekritz Tuesday evening to concede the election. Greenberg, also a Northbrook resident, was not available for comment.
Nekritz said her primary focus in the next session will be on pension reforms.
“My focus will be all pensions, all the time,” Nekritz said.
She said the issue is too vital to the state’s future not to get lawmakers’ full attention in the next legislative session. She said pension reform measures have been close to passing before and that she is optimistic that this will be the time that reforms actually take place.
The mood early Tuesday evening at the combined poll-watching party for Greenberg and Republican state Senate candidate Arie Friedman was subdued with as much attention being paid to the presidential race as Friedman race.
