Shanes bests Braiman for Lake County judgeship

BUFFALO GROVE — Buffalo Grove’s Village President will remain Jeff Braiman, who lost his bid for a judgeship Tuesday night.
Braiman, a Democrat, lost to Republican Daniel Shanes in the race for the third sub-circuit of Lake County’s 19th judicial circuit.
With all 82 precincts counted, the unofficial results had Shanes winning 16,583 votes to Braiman’s 13,345.
Braiman, however, said the campaign had been a joy.
“Obviously, it’s disappointing, but looking back, I did everything I could,” Braiman said.
“I was encouraged by a whole new experience,” he added. “It was enjoyable, I learned a lot from it. My hat’s off to Dan, he’s a great, great guy.”
By 10 p.m. Tuesday night, Shanes had not yet returned calls or emails for comment.
Braiman, a longtime attorney, sought the judgeship while still in his first term as Buffalo Grove’s village president. Elected as Buffalo Grove’s top elected official in April 2011, he began campaigning for the bench less than a year later.
The seat opened with Judge Raymond McKoski’s retirement. The Illinois Supreme Court appointed Shanes to fill it.
Lake County’s third judicial sub-circuit includes Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, Vernon Hills and Mundelein, and portions of Deer Park, Hawthorn Woods, Kildeer, Libertyville and Round Lake Park.
